relocation information PAGE

we want to welcome you

With the recent Altria announcement that Cabarrus would be closing, the members at Local 359-T understand there could be BCTGM Cabarrus employees that are seriously looking into relocating to either the Richmond Manufacturing Center or to Park 500, but some Cabarrus members could be unfamiliar with the Richmond area and its surrounding counties.

It might be a little difficult to know exactly what kind of information each person could use or will need, so in an effort to provide some help to those members interested in moving to the Richmond area. This page hopes to provide information, along with web sites that may shed a little light on such subjects as local school information, taxes, area information, and getting a Virginia drivers license.

short descriptions about the virginia plants

The Richmond Manufacturing plant is the primary location where a great majority of the BCTGM members are located, and their Local is "Local 203-T". The primary function of the Manufacturing plant is making and packaging cigarettes. Currently, there are several thousand hourly employees that are employed there.

The Park 500 processing plant is smaller employer of BCTGM members, and the local there is "Local 359-T".  This processing plant can be seen as being very much like a paper mill. At this facility, scrap tobacco is processed back into a usable product.  Approximately 150 hourly workers are currently working there.

richmond and surrounding counties

Here is a general map of the state that shows many of the cities and counties

In the map section shown below, we tried to focus briefly on the part of that Virginia map from above where the two Philip Morris facilities are located, as well as the cities and counties where a majority of the employees reside. The green #1 represents roughly where the Philip Morris Manufacturing plant is located in relation to the surrounding area, and the green #2 represents the Park 500 processing plant location. The black numbers within the same map represent the primary cities within the area.

It takes roughly between 25 minutes and 35 minutes to get from The Richmond Manufacturing plant to Park 500. The actual time can vary depending on your driving habits, the weather, or traffic conditions. Using that approximate time traveling between the two facilities, a person can get a rough idea on travel times venturing in the various directions.

Chesterfield and Henrico are the only two counties that completely surround the city of Richmond (black #3) and are considered the more busier and fastest growing counties within the state.

The cities of Hopewell (black #4), Colonial Heights (black #5), and Petersburg (black #6) are known as the "Tri-City Area" and each are smaller in area and population than Richmond.

the media

NEWSPAPERS

The primary Richmond area newspaper that central Virginia area subscribes to is:

The paper is delivered in the morning, and they have several ways to subscribe.

bullet 7-Day Subscription (Mon-Sun)
bullet 6-Day Subscription (Mon-Sat)
bullet Weekend Only Subscription (Fri-Sun)
bullet Sunday Only Subscription

For anyone that is interested, this paper can be received daily by mail. This might be a good idea for anyone considering relocating. This newspaper is a great way to start getting familiar with the area, and it has a good real estate section, particularly the Sunday edition.

NOTE: Although it could be possible that the mailed version of the newspaper could arrive on the same day as being published, the most likely scenario is that it always be at least one day late. This definitely applies to the Sunday edition. Also, some of the larger chain bookstores carry surrounding state newspapers (Borders, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million). If they don't, ask them to strongly consider it, and tell them why you and other Cabarrus employees might be interested in this Richmond paper.

TELEVISION

The primary television channels that are used for news and entertainment are:

Other channels

Although you will not be able to get any of these channels down in North Carolina, their web sites are still another good source for getting familiar with the area through the good or bad news events that are happening daily.

real estate

Where would be the best place for a person to move here if they relocated? That's a good question that would be extremely difficult for anyone answer, and it will always be hard to know what anyone will really like towards a permanent location. Some people like the country, and some people like the city. Some people want higher end homes, while others prefer home prices that are in the middle or lower end. In some cases, some people really don't know what they may want. The examples could go on for ever.

The one thing a member might possibly do is think about contacting their local real estate agent in North Carolina. They should be able to have the resources and contacts with the bigger real estate chains to find someone here in Virginia that might be able to help you. Have them provide several different agent names in several of the real estate offices in Virginia. Those Virginia agents or offices can be a big help with members finding the right area of Virginia that appeals to them.

Also, one suggestion might be to consider making several appointments in advance with two or three real estate agents in different areas on the same day, and then plan of spending the entire day here them. Perhaps even plan on on a weekend. Just remember, such things as interstate highway access, shopping centers, and school systems can play a be factor in the price of a home.

If you would prefer to find an agent yourself, here are a few of the major real estate chains that are seen in our area. They might be able to suggest agents directly:
